Why should you undertake maintenance on your pond?

You may wonder why you need maintenance when you have invested in expensive filtration.  The answer is simple, even the most expensive equipment will become less effective once it becomes full of debris and fish waste.

It is the same principle as your car, or your own health.  Everything works better with a little MOT.

At your maintenance visit, along with a thorough clean, your technician will apply minerals and beneficial bacteria to your waters.  Your pond depends on a very delicate ecosystem and keeping the water correctly balanced ensures your fish and plant life have the very best opportuntity to thrive.  Our technicians will give you advice on how to monitor your own levels and as a member of our maintenance scheme, you have access to unlimited technical telephone advice.

Why is maintenance so important

Filtration performance

Lack of maintenance allows for small particles of debris, which includes leaf and plant matter, excess fish food and falling twigs from surrounding trees, to make its way into your pump or filter, slowing its performance.  Fish waste is also a major contributor to an unhealthy pond and left unmanaged can cause toxicity in the water.  During your seasonal maintenance visit our team will fully strip pumps and filters removing all debris and allowing your equipment to function fully.

Sludge creation

Not removing excess plant matter  will mean that in time this will sink to the bottom.  You will find that the pond is slowly starting to fill itself in and by allowing a build up of plant matter at the base of your water, you are creating a bed of sludge.  If this is left untouched, it will result in your pond requiring a full empty and fresh start to rebuild its delicate ecosystem.  During your maintenance, our team use aquatic safe pond hoovers to remove this sludge without causing damage to fish and wildlife.

Excessive phosphate

As garden waste breaks down at the bottom of your pond, phosphate is released.  A large amount of phosphate can encourage a bloom of plants such as blanket weed, which once it has established, can be difficult to manage. Removing this excessive waste can be one way to try and target blanket weed, along with implenting a planting scheme.  Regular testing provides a good indication of levels and our team can use required minerals to support your water.
